Location

The Hospital will be located at the site known as the Old Portuguese Hospital (also known as the Dr Antonio Carvalho) at Lahane, four kilometers from the centre of Dili in the surrounding hills as shown in Diagram 1 and in the photographs below. The Old Portuguese Hospital is 100 years old and provided services until 10 years ago. Pre-listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the building requires extensive refurbishment and expansion to return it to a fully functioning hospital facility.

The site is close to the two main healthcare facilities in Dili, Guido Validares National Hospital and the Bairo Pite Clinic, both of which will be referring cases to HOH. Dili is the major port of Timor-Leste which is important for easy transfer of supplies, and has an international airport which is important for movement of staff and laboratory specimens. The slightly cooler altitude makes it an ideal location for a hospital. Dili is centrally placed in Timor-Leste, with the ferries to both Oecussi Island and Atauro Island. Almost all of the people of Timor-Leste have relatives in Dili so they will feel welcome and have somewhere to stay if their relative is admitted to the Hospital. Dili is also the best connected town in Timor-Leste by road, and helicopter flying times across the island to Dili are less than to any other location.
